Diverse contributions of nature to climate change adaptation in an upland landscape

چکیده
Nature provides numerous functions and services that can contribute to societal climate change adaptation. These ‘adaptation services’ be sustained, latent, or novel, depend on persistence transformation of ecosystems, require varying co-production by people. Adaptation also include mitigation. We present an approach explore extensive set land use scenarios outline possible futures for a landscape, quantify the contributions adaptation services. quantified success across six criteria relevant region, characterised different types services, mapped spatial variation in landscape. built integrated model Mackenzie District (an upland landscape Aotearoa New Zealand), analysed 1200 hypothetical period 2060–2070. found many options, with 46% meeting successful Four two latent five novel co-produced through financial input made diverse economic profit, profit resilience, mitigation, risk adaptation, cultural heritage biodiversity. Successful were multifunctional, relying alternative combinations allowed heterogeneity. By accounting relationships between people natural components within complex systems, our advanced simulation inform participatory pathway development quantifying potential nature future

Adaptation to Climate Change
We investigate the effect of climate change on population growth in 18th and 19th century Iceland. We find that annual temperature changes help determine the population growth rate in preindustrial Iceland: a year 1◦C cooler than average drives down population growth rates by 0.57% in each of the next two years, for a total effect of 1.14%. We also find that 18th and 19th century Icelanders ada...
متن کاملContributions of psychology to limiting climate change.
Psychology can make a significant contribution to limiting the magnitude of climate change by improving understanding of human behaviors that drive climate change and human reactions to climate-related technologies and policies, and by turning that understanding into effective interventions. This article develops a framework for psychological contributions, summarizes what psychology has learne...

We also find that 18th and 19th century Icelanders adapt to prolonged changes in climate: these adaptations take about 20 years and reduce the short ...
متن کاملAdaptation to climate change in developing countries.
Adaptation to climate change is given increasing international attention as the confidence in climate change projections is getting higher. Developing countries have specific needs for adaptation due to high vulnerabilities, and they will in this way carry a great part of the global costs of climate change although the rising atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations are mainly the responsibili...
متن کاملAdaptation to Climate Change in Swedish Forestry
Adaptation to climate change in forestry has become a growing concern, in part due to the impact of storms and other events that have raised the awareness of such risks amongst forest owners. Sweden is one of Europe’s most densely-forested countries, with this sector playing a major role economically. However adaptation has, to a large extent, been limited to the provision of recommendations to...
